Valentine’s day is around the corner and so is the buzz about celebrating the day dedicated to love and romance. People say I Love You all the time - when they say, ‘take an umbrella, it’s raining,’ or ‘hurry back,’ or even ‘watch out, you’ll break your neck.’ There are hundreds of ways of wording it- you just have to listen for it. Along with all these, Valentine’s day is that one day when you Go Big and Go all out!
According to the legend, it is known to have originated in Rome. During this time, Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers, hence he outlawed marriage for young men. A young priest named Valentine could not stand this injustice and defied Claudius. He continued to perform marriages for young lovers but in secret. Claudius eventually discovered Valentine’s actions and gave him a death sentence. Valentine fell in love with his jailer’s daughter, who visited him in prison. And before he was hung he wrote a letter that said ‘from your Valentine’ which is popularly used even today. Pope Gelasius declared Feb. 14 a day to honor Valentine, who by that time had become a saint. So now that you got to know the sad story about Valentine’s day.
