The Story Behind Krishna Janmashtami
Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated annually marking the birth of Lord Krishna. Krishna is considered to be the eight incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Krishna being incarnated signifies the eradication of evil from earth. As per the Hindu mythology, Mother Earth requested Lord Brahma to put an end to all the havoc that was being unleashed on earth. Lord Brahma then went to Lord Vishnu with the concerns of Mother Earth. Lord Brahma was reassured by Lord Vishnu that he would be born on earth in order to put an end to the evils there. Just like what was told to Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu was born as Krishna at 12 on the 8th day (Ashtami) during the Shravan month.
Krishna was born to King Vasudev and Devaki in Mathura. Devaki had a brother called Kamsa, who was a very cruel man and he engaged in heinous activities. It was during Devaki’s wedding to Vasudev, Kamsa was warned by some astrologers who told him that the child of Devaki and Vasudev would kill him. After hearing this, Kamsa puts the couple in a prison and kills every baby that is born to them. When Devaki gives birth to Krishna, Vasudev secretly arranges for the baby to be carried away and this abby is then replaced with another baby, that happens to be Yashoda’s daughter. When Kamsa comes to kill this baby, she turns into Goddess Adi Parashakti. She in turn warns Kamsa that there is nothing he can do to change his fate and that his death is nearing him. In the meantime, baby Krishna is carried to the other side of the river Yamuna. Here he is then rescued and looked after by Yeshoda and her husband Nanda in Gokul.
