Kollur Mookambika temple history | Adi Shankaracharya
Kollur Mookambika temple is one of the auspicious temples of Karnataka. This is one among the seven abodes of salvation, in the creation of Parashurama. Mookambika temple is situated in Kollur, Udupi district of Karnataka.
This temple is dedicated to knowledge and art and Goddess here worshipped as Lord of speech and letters. It is said that the idol of Mookambika Devi is made of “Panchaloha” - five metals (gold, silver, copper, iron and lead).
Adi Shankracharya was the person who installed the Kollur Mookambika temple. He is one of the intellectual persons, who is known for expounded Advaita Vedanta and also believed the founder of Dashanami Sampradaya. He was an Indian philosopher and theologian.
History of Kollur Mookambika temple -
Kollur Mookambika temple is believed to be 1200 years old and many kings had faith in this temple. The local kings and the well-kown Kings of Keladi Dynasty, Shankanna Nayaka and Shivappa Nayaka had given many donations for the temple and renovated it.
As we discuss that this temple was installed by Adi Shankracharya when he got the vision of Sri Mookambika Devi, according to legends the day when Devi appeared in front of him and asking for his wish, Adi Shankracharya wishes to install Devi’s idol. Devi agreed on it but to test Adi Shankracharya, Devi makes a condition that she will follow him to his destination and he should not look back. When they reach Kollur Adi Shankracharya turned back in doubt whether she is coming or not. After that incident, Devi asks Adi Shankracharya to install his idol right on this location which was Kollur.

Sri Kollur Mookambika Devi is the form of Adi Lakshmi, the creator and protector of all forms of life. It is found that temple has been an adobe of Devi Shakti’s worship for centuries.
Thousands of devotees including politicians and filmstars visit the temple during Navratri or during the month of Phalguna, on Moola Nakshtra day which is the birth day of Devi. Everyday in the temple Trikala pooja is performed.
At 5:00 AM morning everyday Nirmalaya pooja being hosted in temple where many devotees get a opportunity to to see the Swayambhoo Lingam.
