Ganesha: God of Wisdom
There is a reason why Lord Ganesha is known as the god of wisdom and knowledge and this story illustrates why.
Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati had another son called Karthikeya who was Ganesha’s brother. One day Ganesha and Karthikeya got into an argument about a very unique fruit - ‘the fruit of knowledge’. As they both wanted it Shiva and Parvati put forth a proposition to the both of them. Shiva recognised this fruit, as this was the fruit that grants knowledge and immortality when it's eaten by the rightful person for it.
To choose who gets this fruit there was a challenge that Ganesha and Karthikeya had to complete. The challenge was that both Ganesha and Karthikeya had to had to circle the world three times. The first person to complete this task and come back to Mount Kailash would be the owner of this fruit.
Karthikeya had a pet peacock, so He immediately hopped on it and flew away quickly to complete the given task. Ganesha had a pet rat that could not fly. Ganesha had listened to the proposition from Shiva properly and therefore He started to walk around Shiva and Parvati three times. When he was asked by Shiva why he went around in circles around them, Ganesha answered by saying that his parents were his world.
After hearing this Shiva was touched by the wisdom of Ganesha and chose Him as the rightful owner of the fruit.
