Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or Mahatma Gandhi who is popularly known as ‘bapuji’ was born on October 2nd, 1869. The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is celebrated as a national festival called Gandhi Jayanti.
Mahatma Gandhi was a politician, an Indian lawyer, activist and writer. Gandhiji was a pioneer of truth and non-violence. He started the 'Satyagraha' (non-violence) movement and even Quit-India movement for India’s freedom. He played a very significant role in achieving independence for India from British rule. He proved to the world that freedom can be achieved through the path of total non-violence.
Gandhi Jayanti is marked by prayer services and tributes all over India, including at Gandhi's memorial in New Delhi where he was cremated. Many activities are conducted including prayer meetings, commemorative ceremonies in different cities by schools,colleges, government organisations and socio-political institutions.
Gandhiji’s presence can be felt in our everyday life . He can be seen in the hallways, breathes in the freedom songs which we sing.He stands tall in every history textbook , define political and social debates that absorb us.
