Dussehra

The name Dussehra is derived from Sanskrit. The word dasha translates to ten and hara means defeat. This festival is the symbolisation of the victory of good over evil. The last and final day of Navratri is called Vijayadashami or Dussehra. This festival is a huge celebration just by itself as it is one of the oldest festivals and is celebrated all over India. 

We learn in Ramayana, which is the story of Lord Rama, that he was exiled from Ayodhya. During this period he lived in the forest with his wife and brother, Sita and Lakshmana. One day, Ravana abducts Sita and takes her to Lanka. Rama, Lakshmana with the assistance from an army of monkeys attack Lanka in order to rescue Sita. Because Rama finds it hard to defeat Ravana, he prays for nine days to nine different avatars of Durga. By doing so, he gains enough strength to defeat Ravana. Therefore, Dussehra marks and celebrates this victory of Rama over Ravana, the ten headed demon king.
