Diwali

Diwali (or Deepavali in Sanskrit) means "a row of lights".  Diwali signifies the new beginnings and the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. Diwali is one of the most significant festivals in the Indian culture, lakhs of people attend firework’s displays, prayers and celebratory events across the world. This festival is celebrated over five days.

  • Day one falls on 25th Oct 2019. It is celebrated as Dhanteras. This is the of Diwali. It's dedicated to celebrating wealth. People traditionally buy gold and new kitchen utensils on this day and people welcome goddess Lakshmi. 
  • Day two ( 26th Oct 2019)  is celebrated as Naraka Chaturdasi in south India or Choti Diwali (Little Diwali) in North India. Rangoli’s are drawn in doorways and courtyards of homes, and people burst crackers. Lord Krishna and Goddess Kali are believed to have destroyed the demon Narakasura.
  • Day three (27th Oct 2019): Houses are lit with diyas and candles. Fireworks are started everywhere, giving Diwali its name of “Festival of Lights”. Families come together to perform Lakshmi Puja and gifts and sweets are shared among each other. Kali Puja is usually also celebrated on this day in West Bengal, Odisha and Assam.
  • Day four (28th Oct 2019) , Vendors open new accounts for the new year, and offer prayers. Govardhan Puja is celebrated in north India, to commemorate Lord Krishna's defeat of Indra, the rain god. In Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the victory of Lord Vishnu over demon king Bali is celebrated as Bali Pratipada or Bali Padyami.
  • Day five (29th Oct 2019) and the last day, known as Bhai Duj, is dedicated to celebrating sisters. Brothers and sisters get together and share food, to honor the bond between them.
